The Spaces We Tend to Forget About
We all have them. Those little spaces in our homes that we keep meaning to organize, but somehow never get around to.
Maybe it's the junk drawer in the kitchen, the cabinet under the bathroom sink, or the linen closet where everything gets pushed onto a shelf and the door quickly closes.
These spaces are easy to overlook because, for the most part, they're out of sight. We can close the drawer or cabinet and go about our day.
Until we need something.
Then we're digging through a drawer looking for batteries, searching through a cabinet for a cleaning product we know we bought, or pulling everything off a shelf just to find a fresh set of sheets.
Sound familiar?
The funny thing is that these smaller spaces are often some of the easiest places to organize. And once they're done, they can make everyday life a little easier.
Start with One Small Space
Think about an area in your home that frustrates you. It doesn't have to be a big project. In fact, I'd encourage you to start with something small.
Take everything out and see what's actually there.
You might be surprised by what you find. Three bottles of the same cleaning product, expired medications, old batteries, or things you've been looking for but couldn't remember where you put them.
As you go through everything, ask yourself a few questions.
Do I still use this? Do I need it? Is this really the best place to keep it?
Once you've decided what belongs in that space, give everything a home that makes sense.
A Few Places Worth Checking
If you're not sure where to begin, here are a few spots that might need a little attention:
The junk drawer: How many pens actually work? Are there old receipts, takeout menus, or miscellaneous items that belong somewhere else?
The linen closet: Are you holding on to towels that have seen better days or sheets that no longer fit any of your beds?
Under the kitchen sink: Check for empty bottles, duplicate supplies, and things that have been pushed to the back and forgotten.
The bathroom cabinet: Take a look at toiletries, samples, and products you tried once but never used again.
The entryway: Are there shoes, bags, and jackets that no longer need to be there?
You don't need to tackle all five. Choose one and see how it goes.
Small Spaces Can Make a Big Difference
One of the things I love about organizing a small space is that you can often finish it in a relatively short amount of time.
And there's something satisfying about opening a drawer and being able to find exactly what you're looking for.
The next time you have twenty minutes to spare, take a look around your home. Is there a drawer, shelf, or cabinet you've been avoiding?
That might be a good place to start.
