Files or Piles? Organizing That Works for You

While presenting at a recent workshop, I shared a story about my mom and me. We were both teachers at the same school, but we had very different ways of organizing our classrooms.

I organized with files. My papers were neatly tucked away in folders inside a filing cabinet. My mom organized with piles. Her papers were laid out on her desk and table, where she could see them.

By social media standards, my mom’s classroom might have looked disorganized, while mine might have looked like I had it all together.

But if you asked either of us to find something, we could put our hands on it in a matter of seconds.

We had each created a system that worked for us. Mine made sense to me. Hers made sense to her. And both helped us do our jobs.

What Does Organized Look Like?

We often judge how organized a space is by how it looks. Clear surfaces, matching containers, and neatly labeled baskets give the impression that everything is under control.

But appearance only tells part of the story.

Can you find what you need? Is it easy to put things away? Does your system fit your routines? Can you keep it going during a busy week?

Those questions tell us much more about whether an organizing system is working.

For some people, putting things behind a cabinet door creates calm. For others, keeping certain items visible helps them remember what needs their attention. Someone might love a detailed filing system, while someone else does better with a few clearly labeled trays.

The goal is to make daily life easier.

Start With Your Life

At Calm Living Solutions, we work with you to create systems that fit how you live.

That begins with listening. What is frustrating you about your space? What is already working? Where do things tend to collect? What would make your day feel a little easier?

An Instagram influencer’s kitchen or a beautiful Pinterest picture might offer inspiration. Your home, however, needs to work for the people who live in it—with your schedules, your habits, and your needs.

A basket near your favorite chair might be the right place for your reading materials. Hooks by the door might make putting away jackets easier. A simple paper tray might help you keep track of things that need attention.

Small, practical changes can make a real difference when they fit naturally into your day.

Our CALM Method

Through our four-step CALM Method, we guide you through sorting your belongings, assessing what you use and need, letting go of what no longer serves you, and creating systems you can maintain.

We work through those decisions together, with care and without judgment. Along the way, we help you find a place for the things you choose to keep, and a manageable way to keep them there.

My mom and I had different systems, but we shared the same result: we could find what we needed and get on with our day.

That is what we want for you, too.

How We Can Help

If your organizing system is making it harder to find what you need or keep things in order, Calm Living Solutions can help. We’ll work alongside you using our four-step CALM Method to sort through what you own, assess what you need, let go of what no longer serves you, and create a system that works for your everyday life. We can also help you donate the items you no longer need to a charity of your choice.
