Before You Switch Your Closet for Fall

As the cooler weather arrives, many of us start moving our summer clothes out of the way and bringing our fall clothes back into the closet.

But before you simply trade one season for the next, take a little time to go through what you have.

Your summer wardrobe is still fresh in your mind right now. You know which clothes you wore again and again, and which ones you passed over every time you opened the closet.

Before putting everything into bins or moving it to another closet, ask yourself a few simple questions:

Did I have an opportunity to wear this?

Did I wear this at all?

Does it still fit comfortably?

Is it in good condition?

Would I be happy to wear it again next summer?

If the answer is no, there may be no reason to store it for another year. Donate anything that is still in good condition and let go of pieces that are worn out, stained or damaged.

Then, as you bring out your fall clothes, take another look before placing everything back in your closet. You may find sweaters that no longer fit, jackets you don’t enjoy wearing or items that no longer feel like your style.

You don’t have to keep something simply because you kept it last year.

Once you’ve decided what you truly want to wear, give those pieces a little breathing room. When clothes are packed tightly together, it’s harder to see what you own and easier to forget about things. A little extra space can make getting dressed, and keeping the closet organized, much easier.

This doesn’t have to become an all-day project. Start with one section of your closet, one drawer or even one category, such as sweaters or shoes.

The goal isn’t to create a closet that looks perfect.

It’s to create one that makes your mornings feel a little easier.
