Getting Your Home Fall Ready

There’s something about the first cool morning that makes you realize fall is really coming.

The windows have been open all summer, flip-flops are still by the door, beach towels are mixed in with the regular towels, and somehow the sunscreen is still sitting on the kitchen counter.

This is a great time to give your home a little attention and get ready for the change of season.

Start with the things you probably won’t be using much longer. Before you pack away your summer clothes, take a look at what you actually wore. If something never made it out of the closet this summer, do you really want to store it for another year?

Do the same thing with your summer gear. Beach chairs, pool toys, gardening supplies and outdoor items tend to get packed away without much thought. Before you store everything, get rid of what is broken, donate what you no longer use and clean up what you want to keep.

Now you have a little more room for the things you’ll actually need.

Bring jackets and sweaters to a spot where they’re easy to grab. Make some room near the door for closed-toe shoes and boots. Pull out the extra blankets and wash them before the really chilly nights arrive.

This is also a good time to peek into some of those areas we tend to forget about. The front closet is a perfect example. Are there coats in there that no longer fit anyone? Gloves without a match? Things that have been hanging there since last winter that nobody wore?

You don’t have to do the entire house.

Choose one area and start there. Maybe this weekend it’s the front closet. Next weekend it’s the garage or the summer clothes.

A little preparation now can make the change of seasons feel much easier.

And when that first really chilly morning arrives, you’ll know exactly where your favorite sweater is.
